Pick the Right Box: 32 ECT versus 200 LB Test

25th Jan 2024

You’ve probably heard the terms ECT and 200 LB Test regarding boxes. To pick the correct box for your needs or to help a customer choose the right box, it’s essential to know the difference between the two. So, here’s the deal:

"Choosing the right box is more than a matter of strength; it's about understanding the journey it will take. It's not just what it can carry, but how and where it will carry it that matters."

ECT = Edge Crush Test. The standard is a 32 ECT, meaning the box can withstand up to 32 pounds of weight on each inch of its edge without collapsing. This refers to stacking strength.

200 LB Test = Bursting strength. This means the box can withstand up to 200 pounds without bursting.

Boxes that meet the 200 lb. test will exceed 32 ECT stacking strength. However, 32 ECT boxes are manufactured with high-performance liners 19% lighter than 200-lb. test boxes. High-performance liner durability offers better stacking strength and saves shipping costs.

Bottom Line: Overall, 200 lb. test boxes are more robust than 32 ECT. However, when helping your customer pick the correct box, it’s essential to determine how the boxes will be used (shipping, storage, etc.) and factor in the shipping savings of 32 ETC boxes.
